It\u2019s not unlike being the&nbsp;director of a movie,&nbsp;overseeing the imaginative beginnings, middles, and endings&nbsp;of a film as well as the critical details that make up each section, each scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>One of those memorable highlights for me was in the&nbsp;heart of&nbsp;Siberia, chasing the sun in a total solar eclipse.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"MIR&#039;s 30 Years: Total Solar Eclipse in Siberia\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iN9M3wbW8ig?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-xd-layout \n  container\n XD-mt--sm XD-mb--sm\n undefined\n XD-h-100--sm XD-h-100--md XD-h-100--lg XD-h-100--xl\" style=\"background-size:cover;background-color:\" uk-scrollspy=\"\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\" col-sm-12 col-md-8 col-lg-6 col-xl-6 offset-sm-0 offset-md-2 offset-lg-3 offset-xl-3\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Celestial Sightings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2008, about 350 of us \u2013 our international MIR team and travelers from around the U.S. \u2013 descended on&nbsp;Novosibirsk,&nbsp;<a href=\"\/country\/siberia-and-the-russian-far-east\/\">Siberia<\/a> for a rare event:&nbsp;a total solar eclipse,&nbsp;when the circle of the sun is totally erased by the moon\u2019s shadow. Photo credit: Douglas Grimes<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sunny Siberia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On August 1, 2008, that Path of Totality&nbsp;sliced through the middle of Siberia&nbsp;from top to bottom, entering at Novaya Zemlya, a remote island in the Arctic Ocean, and exiting into&nbsp;<a href=\"\/country\/mongolia\/\">Mongolia<\/a>. In southern Siberia it passed&nbsp;almost directly over Novosibirsk,&nbsp;the region\u2019s largest city with a population of 1.4 million at that time.&nbsp;To some people,&nbsp;Siberia may seem as remote as Antarctica. Hotels for such large numbers of travelers were scarce, but we booked 100 rooms for many of our MIR travelers in a newly remodeled hotel, which&nbsp;we had reserved three years earlier&nbsp;hoping that renovations would be finished in time.&nbsp;It was a gamble,&nbsp;but it was one that definitely paid off. Both our <a href=\"\/mir-near-far\/\">Seattle and overseas&nbsp;offices<\/a> worked in both English and Russian languages while&nbsp;sorting through complex visa requirements, wide-ranging arrival and departure times, and handling 10 different tour packages \u2013 each with its own unique itinerary.
