But its later settlers \u2013 Western Balts, who spoke a Latvian language \u2013 managed to denude the fragile spit of trees by the 16th century. For 300 years the winds and waves battered the area,&nbsp;burying fourteen villages&nbsp;under the encroaching dunes. D. Kuvertas began planting trees to help stabilize the dunes around Nida near the end of the spit, and since then an&nbsp;ongoing reforestation project&nbsp;has helped to protect the spit from destruction.&nbsp;<strong>Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, the Curonian Spit is a strange landscape of corrugated dunes; little villages; and forests of linden, elm, birch, and pine.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"646\" height=\"430\" src=\"https:\/\/mircorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Nida-0002-sm.jpg\" alt=\"White sand and blue sea on Lithuania\u2019s Curonian Spit. Photo credit: Kestutis Ambrozaitis<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-xd-layout \n  container\n XD-mt--sm XD-mb--sm\n undefined\n XD-h-100--sm XD-h-100--md XD-h-100--lg XD-h-100--xl\" style=\"background-size:cover;background-color:\" uk-scrollspy=\"\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\" col-sm-12 col-md-8 col-lg-6 col-xl-6 offset-sm-0 offset-md-2 offset-lg-3 offset-xl-3\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Extinct Sail Boats<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Valued for its culture as well as its natural beauty, the spit was home to a people who \u2013 before the Second World War decimated them \u2013 were famed for their tin weathervanes; their&nbsp;<em>kur\u0117nas<\/em>, or flat-bottomed sail boats; and their&nbsp;<em>krik\u0161tas<\/em>, or carved wooden grave markers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The original wooden&nbsp;<em>kur\u0117nas<\/em>&nbsp;were allowed to decay after WWII, when the laws were changed and fishing by motorboat became legal. <strong>First mentioned in the 14th and 15th centuries,&nbsp;<em>kur\u0117nas<\/em>&nbsp;were used up until this time by the fishing fleet in the freshwater Curonian Lagoon.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"618\" height=\"403\" src=\"https:\/\/mircorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nature42005514848-618-2.jpg\" alt=\"UNESCO-listed Curonian Spit. Around 500 pairs of the herons coexist uneasily with a growing colony of Great Black Cormorants. The cormorants began moving in at the beginning of the 19th century and taking over the big nests of sticks that the herons build. The Prussians, who governed the Curonian Spit at that time, considered them pests and finally exterminated them. Several pairs began returning during the 1970s, and the cormorants are now about 2,000 pairs strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vente Cape, on the east side of the Curonian Lagoon, is a headland where an ornithological center has been counting and ringing birds since 1929. <strong>The cape is under a major migratory bird flyway, and over 15 million birds pass this way every autumn. <\/strong>The globally important wetlands are protected by the Ramsar Conventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"618\" height=\"464\" src=\"https:\/\/mircorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/nature320055143213-618.jpg\" alt=\"The vegetation on the dunes helps to stabilize the Curonian Spit.
