The vast Tibetan Plateau, with an average elevation of 14,800 feet \u2013 2.8 miles high \u2013 has been home to humans for at least 30,000 years. Its people were originally nomadic herders who gradually settled in Lhasa, the \u201cCity of the Sun.\u201d Here, the smell of incense and yak-butter candles permeates Tibetan temples and monasteries, and colors seem more vivid in the rarified air. Although Tibet is relatively unchanged, tranquil, and remote for travelers, several projects are underway to expand highways and lay down track for bullet trains, which could alter a centuries-old way of life and isolation.
