My travels here, as well as our generous hosts, always reinvigorate my appreciation of this part of the world.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>It\u2019s a remote, unfamiliar frontier, wide open to travelers who are eager to experience wild beauty, meet nomadic people, and discover the traditions of their forebears.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover alignwide has-background-dim-30 has-background-dim\" style=\"background-image: url('http:\/\/mircorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Tash-Rabat-Stream2FS-1-of-1-Jered-Gorman-1920-250.jpg'); min-height: 250px;\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-cover-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-large-font-size\"><strong>Here are my picks for a few of the many reasons Kyrgyzstan is so special:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-xd-layout \r\n  container\r\n XD-mt--sm XD-mb--sm\r\n undefined\r\n XD-h-100--sm XD-h-100--md XD-h-100--lg XD-h-100--xl\" style=\"background-size: cover;\">\r\n<div class=\"row\">\r\n<div class=\" col-sm-12 col-md-8 col-lg-6 col-xl-6 offset-sm-0 offset-md-2 offset-lg-3 offset-xl-3\">\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1) The Views from Torugart Pass<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>One of the most intriguing ways to enter Kyrgyzstan is by traveling from\u00a0Kashgar\u00a0in\u00a0Western <a href=\"\/country\/china\/\">China<\/a>,\u00a0over the 12,000-foot-plus\u00a0Torugart Pass\u00a0at the China-Kyrgyz border, to\u00a0Tash Rabat. The only sounds are the burbling of a mountain stream, and the low calls of the animals. It\u2019s considered to be the\u00a0world\u2019s second-largest alpine lake, after Lake Titicaca in South America. Archaeological discoveries from the lake\u2019s bottom include ancient relics and graves dating back to the first millennium BC. Here, <strong>I like to visit a local\u00a0Dungan Chinese Muslim family home for a meal\u00a0and to hear\u00a0about Dungan traditions and history.<\/strong> Their culture is a mix of Chinese, Muslim, Kyrgyz, and Russian customs and practices.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"736\" height=\"581\" class=\"wp-image-6396\" src=\"https:\/\/mircorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/P1060566.jpg\" alt=\"Holy Trinity Cathedral in Karakol. You can see that optimism in action with\u00a0a visible infrastructural investment\u00a0in highways, new hotels, guesthouses springing up, and restaurants busy with patrons.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>One\u00a0example is a\u00a0<strong>charming guesthouse in the Chon-Kemin Valley<\/strong>, a family-run establishment built on farmland about 80 miles from Bishkek.
