Khatyn and the Graveyard Villages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>37 miles north of Minsk,&nbsp;the Belarusian capital, is Khatyn.&nbsp;<strong>This village was razed in a Nazi reprisal in 1943 and all of its residents save one perished.&nbsp;<\/strong>The site is now a memorial with a sculpture of the only survivor, Yuzif Kaminsky. Marc Chagall\u2019s Hometown<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Vitebsk, on the shores of the Dvina River near the border with&nbsp;<a href=\"\/country\/russia\/\">Russia<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"\/country\/latvia\/\">Latvia<\/a>, is the fourth largest city in Belarus.<strong>&nbsp;It is best known as the hometown of artist Marc Chagall, and the setting for many of his dream-like paintings.&nbsp;<\/strong>We\u2019ve always loved Chagall\u2019s painting <em>Over the Town<\/em> of lovers floating above Vitebsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town was an important trade and cultural center as far back as the 12th century. Vitebsk became a&nbsp;significant Jewish settlement, or&nbsp;<em>shtetl<\/em>, after Catherine the Great\u2019s decree exiling Russian Jews to beyond the Pale of Settlement. As the largest city near the border, Vitebsk drew many of the displaced Jews of St. Petersburg and Moscow. By 1900, almost 35,000 Jews lived in Vitebsk, over 50% of the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During WWII, the fighting between the Nazis and the Red Army nearly wiped out the entire population of Vitebsk, and it was not until the end of the 1960s that the town regained its pre-war population. Almost none of these were Jews. Today, more than 350,000 people live in Vitebsk. Its&nbsp;Chagall Museum, established in 1997 on Pokrovskaya Street, where his family lived, has only copies of the artist\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-xd-layout \n  container\n XD-mt--sm XD-mb--sm\n undefined\n XD-h-100--sm XD-h-100--md XD-h-100--lg XD-h-100--xl\" style=\"background-size:cover;background-color:\" uk-scrollspy=\"\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\" col-sm-12 col-md-8 col-lg-6 col-xl-6 offset-sm-0 offset-md-2 offset-lg-3 offset-xl-3\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Brest Fortress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarus\u2019 second city, Brest, is located near the&nbsp;Polish&nbsp;border&nbsp;on the Berlin-Moscow railway. Founded by Slavs, the city was captured by the Germans in WWI and became part of <a href=\"\/country\/poland\/\">Poland<\/a> until the Soviet Union annexed it in 1939. After the war, Brest remained a part of Soviet Belarus.&nbsp;<strong>One of the most memorable sites here is Brest Fortress.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" src=\"https:\/\/mircorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/ADAMS-14.jpg\" alt=\"A ceremonial line-up of army and militia officers at Brest Fortress. Photo credit: Bill Adams<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Czar Nicholas I had the massive Brest Fortress built between 1838 and 1842 on the territory of the Old Town. The crenellated red brick citadel became the main Russian outpost on the western border. During the interwar period the fortress was mainly used to house soldiers and did not have much military importance. But that changed with the sudden German invasion, when two regiments stationed at the fortress defended the fort for a month \u2013<strong>&nbsp;a heroic defense making Brest one of the 11 \u201cHero Cities\u201d of the former Soviet Union.<\/strong>&nbsp;Visit the ruins of the White Palace where the Brest-Litovsk negotiations were held, and visit the Defense of Brest Fortress Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"528\" src=\"https:\/\/mircorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/ADAMS-26.jpg\" alt=\"Army\/militia officers at a ceremony held at the Brest Fortress. Belovezhskaya Pushcha Nature Reserve<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This vast forest situated on the&nbsp;Polish&nbsp;border near Brest was the first site in Belarus to be inscribed onto UNESCO\u2019s World Heritage list.<\/strong>&nbsp;It is home to thousands of animal and plant species, many of which are endangered.&nbsp;Originally a royal hunting grounds, Belarus\u2019 half of it became a National Park in 1932 and the&nbsp;<em>wisent&nbsp;<\/em>(European Bison) was reintroduced after being hunted to extinction in the area. Now the park is home to one of the last herds of these rare creatures, along with bear, deer and lynx.
