In February 2014, thousands of people camped and demonstrated here to protest then-president Yanukovych\u2019s decision to strengthen ties with <a href=\"\/country\/russia\/\">Russia<\/a> instead of the EU. The history of the street goes back 2,000 years, and formed the shortest route between the aristocratic Upper Town and the old tradesmen\u2019s quarter, Podil. The complex includes an open-air museum of tanks, artillery, and helicopters; a flower-scattered Eternal Flame; and an indoor National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War. Literally translated as \u201cegg-writing,\u201d this traditional craft has been elevated to an art in Ukraine.
