But beyond its natural outdoorsy appeal, it&nbsp;is also a land of deeply spiritual people. The country\u2019s shamanistic traditions may be better known to the world, but Buddhism has played just as important a role in shaping Mongolian history and culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mongolia, Monasteries, and Monks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the \u201cLand of the Nomads,\u201d&nbsp;<strong>Buddhist monasteries were often the only permanent structures<\/strong> and one of the few cultural repositories of the arts. Borrowing traditions from their&nbsp;<a href=\"\/country\/tibet\/\">Tibetan<\/a>&nbsp;neighbors, Mongolians soon developed their own unique practices and began incorporating them with existing shamanistic beliefs. Monasteries are being rebuilt and restored, and a once-lost religious and cultural heritage is slowly being rediscovered. Gandantegchinlen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Built in 1838, Gandantegchinlen (often abbreviated to just \u201cGandan\u201d) means \u201cGreat Place of Complete Joy,\u201d and grew to become&nbsp;<strong>Mongolia\u2019s principal center of Buddhist education<\/strong>. At one time the monastery housed nine colleges and over 5,000 monks. Badly damaged during the Stalinist purges, Gandan reopened in 1944 as a showpiece for foreign visitors \u2013 it was the only temple allowed to function during the Communist regime. The original statue was commissioned in 1911, but was lost during the Communist period \u2013 allegedly melted down to make Soviet bullets. <strong>The statue that stands today was built in 1996, and many Mongolians view it with pride as&nbsp;a symbol of their nation\u2019s rebirth and strength<\/strong>. Amarbayasgalant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Amarbayasgalant, the \u201cMonastery of Tranquil Felicity,\u201d is&nbsp;<strong>one of the three largest monastic centers in <a href=\"\/country\/mongolia\/\">Mongolia<\/a><\/strong>. Commissioned by Manchu Emperor Yongzheng, the monastery was&nbsp;<strong>built between 1727 and 1737<\/strong>&nbsp;as the final resting place of Zanabazar, the famous sculptor and first spiritual head of Buddhism in Mongolia. Photo credit: Peter Guttman<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can\u2019t Miss:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Though&nbsp;remote, Amarbayasgalant is well worth the visit.<strong>&nbsp;28 of the original temples remain&nbsp;\u2013 all restored by UNESCO in 1988 \u2013 making it&nbsp;one of the country\u2019s most intact monasteries.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike many Mongolian monasteries that borrowed heavily from Tibetan temples, Amarbayasgalant was&nbsp;built in the Chinese style. Be sure to note the Chinese inscriptions, symmetrical layout, deep red color scheme and Chinese roof guardians. The richly decorated main temple contains a statue of Rinpoche Gurdava, a Mongolian monk who raised a huge portion of the monastery\u2019s restoration funds. While here, you can&nbsp;<strong>witness monks performing their morning ceremonies<\/strong>, and the surrounding mountains offer a great opportunity for a hike and beautiful views of the valley.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-xd-layout \n  container\n XD-mt--sm XD-mb--sm\n undefined\n XD-h-100--sm XD-h-100--md XD-h-100--lg XD-h-100--xl\" style=\"background-size:cover;background-color:\" uk-scrollspy=\"\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\" col-sm-12 col-md-8 col-lg-6 col-xl-6 offset-sm-0 offset-md-2 offset-lg-3 offset-xl-3\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Mandshir<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Though from the surface it may not look impressive,&nbsp;<strong>Mandshir remains an important site for today\u2019s practicing Mongolian Buddhists<\/strong>. Established in 1733, Mandshir was dedicated to Manjusri \u2013 the&nbsp;<em>bodhisattva<\/em>&nbsp;of wisdom \u2013 and eventually became&nbsp;<strong>one of Mongolia\u2019s largest monastic centers<\/strong>, housing over 300 monks and 20 temples. The entire complex was razed during the Stalinist purges. Its remains can still be viewed along with old photos showing what it looked like before its destruction in 1937.&nbsp;<strong>It\u2019s a great beginning or ending point for hikes throughout the reserve<\/strong>. For a quick hike nearby, climb up to the cliffs behind the monastery, where you\u2019ll find several Buddhist cave paintings dating from the 18<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;century.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-xd-layout \n  container\n XD-mt--sm XD-mb--sm\n undefined\n XD-h-100--sm XD-h-100--md XD-h-100--lg XD-h-100--xl\" style=\"background-size:cover;background-color:\" uk-scrollspy=\"\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\" col-sm-12 col-md-8 col-lg-6 col-xl-6 offset-sm-0 offset-md-2 offset-lg-3 offset-xl-3\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Erdene Zuu<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>One of the earliest surviving monasteries<\/strong>, <strong>UNESCO-listed Erdene Zuu (\u201cThousand Treasures\u201d) was founded in 1586 as the first Buddhist monastery in <a href=\"\/country\/mongolia\/\">Mongolia<\/a>.<\/strong> At its peak, it housed about 1,000 monks. During the Stalinist purges, all but three of its temples were destroyed.
