On long hauls I\u2019m a window-seat flyer; so when the sea was not obscured by clouds or the opaqueness of nighttime, I would look out and marvel at its vastness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While technically a saline lake, the world\u2019s largest, the Caspian is simply enormous and really lives up to the scale of a sea.&nbsp;Even from 39,000 feet, when you are in the middle of the Caspian, you can\u2019t make out the shoreline in any direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"353\" src=\"https:\/\/mircorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/IngaBelova-20140509_144515-800.jpg\" alt=\"A birds-eye view of the Caspian Sea off Baku. Passing over it meant I was returning to <a href=\"\/region\/central-asia\/\">Central Asia<\/a>, my second home, for another extended stay away from my friends and family back in my first home, the U.S., or that I was leaving that second home for some rest and recreation elsewhere. Going either direction was always bittersweet, and the Caspian always felt like the demarcation between the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite having seen it from the air so many times, I had never actually been down on the ground anywhere near the body of water. So last year when MIR presented me with the opportunity to travel between&nbsp;Yerevan, <a href=\"\/country\/armenia\/\">Armenia<\/a>, and&nbsp;Baku, <a href=\"\/country\/azerbaijan\/\">Azerbaijan<\/a>, I jumped on the offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"440\" src=\"https:\/\/mircorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/MartinKlimenta-Baku-bay-w-flag-800.jpg\" alt=\"A view of the promenade. Photo credit: Martin Klimenta<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The highlight for me, though, was my final destination: Baku, the capital of&nbsp;<a href=\"\/country\/azerbaijan\/\">Azerbaijan<\/a>, perched on the southern shore of a peninsula jutting out into the center of the Caspian.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-xd-layout \n  container\n XD-mt--sm XD-mb--sm\n undefined\n XD-h-100--sm XD-h-100--md XD-h-100--lg XD-h-100--xl\" style=\"background-size:cover;background-color:\" uk-scrollspy=\"\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\" col-sm-12 col-md-8 col-lg-6 col-xl-6 offset-sm-0 offset-md-2 offset-lg-3 offset-xl-3\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Azerbaijan and its People<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"\/country\/azerbaijan\/\">Azerbaijan<\/a> is located where the Caucasus Mountains meet the Caspian Sea, with <a href=\"\/region\/central-asia\/\">Central Asia<\/a> to the east, <a href=\"\/region\/russia\/\">Russia<\/a> to the north, Iran to the south, and <a href=\"\/country\/georgia\/\">Georgia<\/a> and <a href=\"\/country\/armenia\/\">Armenia<\/a> to the west. This is in contrast to the Sunni branch of Islam that predominates in nearby <a href=\"\/country\/turkey\/\">Turkey<\/a>, the Middle East, and <a href=\"\/region\/central-asia\/\">Central Asia<\/a>; and the Orthodox Christianity practiced in <a href=\"\/region\/russia\/\">Russia<\/a>, <a href=\"\/country\/georgia\/\">Georgia<\/a>, and <a href=\"\/country\/armenia\/\">Armenia<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"532\" src=\"https:\/\/mircorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Ana-Filonov-04BakuMarketSquareBackgammon-800.jpg\" alt=\"A friendly game of backgammon in Baku\u2019s market square. Photo credit: Ana Filonov<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The country was under Russian and Soviet rule for much of its recent history.&nbsp;Even today most Azeris speak at least some Russian, and a substantial Russian minority still lives there.&nbsp;<strong>But the Azeri people\u2019s deep historical roots lie to the east, on the steppes of <a href=\"\/region\/central-asia\/\">Central Asia<\/a> and <a href=\"\/country\/mongolia\/\">Mongolia<\/a>, the original homeland of the Turkic clans.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"532\" src=\"https:\/\/mircorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/PeterGuttman-00294_s_r13ajrxlmry0294-800.jpg\" alt=\"The Flame Towers alight in Baku, Azerbaijan. Would it be like the <a href=\"\/region\/central-asia\/\">Central Asia<\/a> I was so familiar with? Like <a href=\"\/country\/georgia\/\">Georgia<\/a> and <a href=\"\/country\/armenia\/\">Armenia<\/a>, Iran, or <a href=\"\/country\/turkey\/\">Turkey<\/a>? Would the Russian influence be as obvious as in other parts of the former Soviet Union? I felt a little silly spending so much time comparing what I was experiencing with other places I had been before, but honestly it was hard not to do so in <a href=\"\/country\/azerbaijan\/\">Azerbaijan<\/a>. Threads of the familiar were everywhere.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-xd-layout \n  container\n XD-mt--sm XD-mb--sm\n undefined\n XD-h-100--sm XD-h-100--md XD-h-100--lg XD-h-100--xl\" style=\"background-size:cover;background-color:\" uk-scrollspy=\"\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\" col-sm-12 col-md-8 col-lg-6 col-xl-6 offset-sm-0 offset-md-2 offset-lg-3 offset-xl-3\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Threads of the Familiar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>I heard Russian and Azeri on every street corner, the latter sounding just like Turkish to my ears. I was in the country right after the mourning holiday of Ashura, and I noticed black banners and flags adorning many mosques. The foods I ate had names familiar to me from Persian and Central Asian languages, but tasted much like the cuisine I\u2019d had in&nbsp;<a href=\"\/country\/georgia\/\">Georgia<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"\/country\/armenia\/\">Armenia<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"511\" src=\"https:\/\/mircorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Baku-Azerbaijan-October-2015-7-800.jpg\" alt=\"A festive summer night stroll through Baku\u2019s Old Town. Photo credit: Jake Smith<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It was the pineapple guava, or&nbsp;<em>feijoa<\/em>.&nbsp;I had seen this fruit before in specialty stores in the U.S., but I had always thought it was grown and eaten mostly in tropical climates, in South America. I was surprised to see stall after stall of them in <a href=\"\/country\/azerbaijan\/\">Azerbaijan<\/a>, on the Caspian, in the former Soviet Union, of all places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My guide explained that the fruit had been introduced decades ago and that they were now common and quite popular in <a href=\"\/country\/azerbaijan\/\">Azerbaijan<\/a>. I bought a kilo to eat over the next few days.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-xd-layout \n  container\n XD-mt--sm XD-mb--sm\n undefined\n XD-h-100--sm XD-h-100--md XD-h-100--lg XD-h-100--xl\" style=\"background-size:cover;background-color:\" uk-scrollspy=\"\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\" col-sm-12 col-md-8 col-lg-6 col-xl-6 offset-sm-0 offset-md-2 offset-lg-3 offset-xl-3\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Absheron Peninsula: Fire Temples, Watchtowers and Oil<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>My last full day in town I visited the&nbsp;Absheron Peninsula. Absheron means \u201cplace of salty waters\u201d in Persian, and, sure enough, it is low, salty, and dotted with reedy marshlands. Interesting stops along the way include the&nbsp;Ateshgah Fire Temple, with Hindu and Zoroastrian roots, and&nbsp;Yanar Dag&nbsp;(\u201cburning mountain\u201d), a natural gas fire emerging from a hillside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/mircorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Ateshgah-Baku-Azerbaijan-October-2015-5-800.jpg\" alt=\"On the way to the Absheron Peninsula, I visited the Ateshgah Fire Temple. Photo credit: Jake Smith<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For those not discouraged by steep, dark stairs, a fear of heights, or a lack of any safety precautions whatsoever, the climb to the top of the&nbsp;Mardakan tower yields gorgeous views of the surrounding village, countryside, and Caspian.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-xd-layout \n  container\n XD-mt--sm XD-mb--sm\n undefined\n XD-h-100--sm XD-h-100--md XD-h-100--lg XD-h-100--xl\" style=\"background-size:cover;background-color:\" uk-scrollspy=\"\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\" col-sm-12 col-md-8 col-lg-6 col-xl-6 offset-sm-0 offset-md-2 offset-lg-3 offset-xl-3\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Room with a View<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>A last highlight for me was the hotel I was based out of. I was very fortunate to be able to spend my nights in the city at the&nbsp;Four Seasons Baku, in a balcony room overlooking the old town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"567\" src=\"https:\/\/mircorp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Baku-Azerbaijan-October-2015-33-800.jpg\" alt=\"A view of the Flame Towers evening light display from the window of my hotel room. Photo credit: Jake Smith<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not a budget hotel \u2013 it is quite expensive, in fact, even by the oil economy standards of <a href=\"\/country\/azerbaijan\/\">Azerbaijan<\/a>.&nbsp;<strong>If one wants luxury though, it is the place to stay.<\/strong>&nbsp;Everything felt well designed, luxurious, and extremely comfortable, from the palatial sauna and swimming pool areas, to the plush room furnishings, to the enormous breakfast buffet spread each morning.
